Catalogue Note

The applied bulrushes on the base of these coolers are taken from French examples on early Louis XV silver.  They were used on pieces connected with water, such as the ewers on dressing table sets, but also on wine coolers, such as the pair with spaniel-head handles from the Penthièvre-Orléans service, Claude Ballin II, Paris, 1744-45 (sold Sotheby's New York, November 13, 1996, lot 4).
