Catalogue Note

Edward Barry was a renowned English architect with one of his most significant commissions being the construction of the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden. His father was the architect Sir Charles Barry, famous for his country houses and for designing the new Palace of Westminster (Houses of Parliament).

When Crewe Hall burnt down in 1866, 1st Baron Houghton reportedly telegraphed from the lawn surrounded by his salvaged pictures declaring: 'Crewe is burning...come and built it up again.' Barry was commis😼sioned, and supervised J. Birnie Philip, J. G. Crace, Henry Weekes and the firm of Clayton and Bell in the constr𒆙uction of the new Crewe Hall.
