Catalogue Note

Richard Slater Milnes was the son and heir of a Presbyterian cloth merchant from Wakefield. Whilst he retained an interest in the trade, he successfully transformed himself into a country gentleman and served as M.P. for York from 1784-1802.  He married in 1781 Rachel Busk, the heir to the estate of the wealthy Hans Busk (see lots 189 and 44) and purchased Fryston Hall in 1788.
