Catalogue Note
The Duchess of Roxburghe’s father, Robert Crewe-Milnes, 1st Marquess of Crewe, so created in 1911, was Secretary of State for India in 1910/11 and again from 1911 to 1915. Following their coronation in June 1911, King George V and Queen Mary travelled to India on the occasion of the Delhi Durbar, assembly of all the princes and dignitaries of India to mark the succession of an Emperor and Empress of India. The official ceremonies lasted from 7 December to 16 December, and the Durbar itself occurring on Tuesday, 12 December. On that occasion, George V declared the shifting of the Indian capital from Calcutta to Delhi, process which was then overseen by Robert Crewe-Milnes.
