Catalogue Note

It was only natural that Oswald Birley should find himself commissioned to paint the present, regal portrait of the Mary Innes-Ker, Duchess of Roxburghe. During his lifetime Birley established a prominent reputation for his paintings of British Royalty and high society. His first royal commission was of George VI in 1928, and there followed portraits of Queen Mary (the Duchess's godmother), Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother and the present monarch HRH Queen Elizabeth II.
