Catalogue Note

The author of The Earl and Countess of Crewe at Home (The Pall Mall Gazette, Vol. 38, July-December, 1906, p.426-433), gives an account of Crewe House. They record breathlessly their encounter in Lord Crewe's study with what could probably be the offered lot, they write ‘One had to pause to admire a grand old example of a French clock with a carved ormolu face and raised china figures and set upon a stand, bronze tinted ormolu and green enamel work, that this was an object of worth and interest was testified by its makers name , - Lonons [sic] á Paris’.
