Catalogue Note
This commode of architectural form reflects the George III taste for the neo-classical Roman style. The unusual form bares many of the hallmarks of the late 18th century firm of Mayhew and Ince. The high quality tropical hardwood veneers, the use of ebonised borders and the fine marquetry paterae are all demonstrative of their output. The severe geometric form is a recurrent theme in some of the firm’s most notable commissions. The 6th Earl of Coventry at Croome Court and the 9th Earl of Exeter at Burghley both had similar pieces in their collections supplied by Mayhew and Ince. Percy Macquoid illustrates a commode of similar form with profuse marquetry in P Macquoid, The Age of Satinwood, ed. 1988, London, p. 370, fig. 835. A similar pair of commodes attributed to Mayhew and Ince was sold, A collection from a New York Townhouse, Christie’s, New York, 15 April 2005, lot 251.
