Description
- A gold and enamel snuff box, Augustin-André Héguin, Paris, 1788
- ENAMEL GOLD
- 7 cm., 2 3/4 in. wide
oval, the lid, sides and base panelled with a trellis of paillons enclosing simulated pearls within interlaced borders, all on a translucent blue ground within opaque white band borders, the interior of the lid with a commemorative glazed plaited hair panel applied with the jewelled initials CF, maker's mark, charge and discharge marks of J.F. Kalendrin
Provenance
Manuscript Catalogue of Miniatures and Objects of Art, n.d., p. 5. ‘It has been conjectured that this is the hair of Kitty Fisher. Crewe collection’. Kitty Fisher (c.1741-1767), the celebrated London courtesan, is unlikely to be the source of the very fair hair in this box as contemporary portraits, such as those by Nathaniel Hone and Sir Joshua Reynolds, show her to have owned lustrous chestnut locks.
Condition
Lid and base in good condition despite minor cracking at top of white border on lid. Left hand side panel scraped; losses to enamel on bottom rim of sides. Would benefit from professional cleaning. Generally smart appearance. Interior of lid panel replaced when hair panel inserted (probably contemporaaneously in England) so unmarked.
