Catalogue Note

Much of Crewe Hall was destroyed by fire in 1866. The house was extensively restored by Hungerford Crewe who had asked Edward Blore, the architect who had remodelled the Hall for him in 1837-40, to rebuild it. He refused to come out of retirement so the work was undertaken by E.M. Barry, son of Charles Barry, and completed in 1870.
