Catalogue Note
Given to Russian subjects on 30 May 1896 in Moscow in celebration of the coronation of Emperor Nicholas II, these beakers have come to be known as the 'Cup of Sorrows'.
On the invitation of the Tsar, huge numbers had gathered at Khodynka field on the outskirts of Moscow to celebrate the coronation. In fear that the authorities had underestimated the number of guests, the crowd stampeded through the barriers to the fair early in the morning. The field was criss-crossed with trenches and pits used for infantry and artillery training, which proved to be death traps for the panicked crowds. A reported 1400 people lost their lives.
