the rectangular pigskin case stamped with initials MR, lined with ochre leather, leather divider, fitted with numerous leather-lined compartments and comprising two leather boxes in sizes, four etched glass boxes and jars with silver mounts and two silver-mounted brushes, each initialled MR under a ducal coronet, maker's mark and London hallmarks, stamped: Cartier London

This was presumably either a wedding present for the future Duchess who married in 1935 or formed part of her trousseau.
A luggage label remains tied to the handle, printed: Her Grace the Duchess of Roxburghe and inscribed in pen: Passenger / London.

It is evident that the case was well-used by the duchess. The exterior has weather stains and the interior traces of spillages and wear. Pinning shows the bristles of the hairbrush were replaced. One scent bottle is missing as are the make-up brushes and manicure set for which holders still remain. The plastic lining to the make-up compartment has cracked and buckled.
