Condition

The canvas is unlined. A dirty varnish and scattered, minor retouchings may be seen, although the overall condition of the picture is good. Offered in an ornate plaster and gilt frame, in a delicate state.

Catalogue Note

Kean Osborne served as a British Army Officer in the 5th Dragoon Guards fighting in Spain and Portugal under the Duke of Wellington during the Peninsular Campaign. He was the son of Kean Osborn of Caswell Hill Estate, Vere, Jamaica, speaker of the House of Assembly of Jamaica from 1799 to 1802. Osborne married Theodosia Ward in 1805, and they had two daughters Margaret Eleanor and Arabella Catherine. He was killed at the Battle of Salamanca on 22 July 1812. On her husband's death, Theodosia received £3,000 'in consideration of his meritious services and of his having been killed in battle'.
