Catalogue Note

The sitter was the daughter of Fulke Greville (1717-1806), Envoy Extraordinary to the Elector of Bavaria, and his wife Frances Macartney  (c.1724-1789). She was considered one of the most beautiful women of her time, and in 1766 she married John Crewe, 1st Baron Crewe (1742-1829). Francis became a great society hostess and entertained lavishly at her husband’s seat Crewe Hall in Cheshire. She was painted on a number of occasions by both Reynolds and Gainsborough and twice in oil by Lawrence in circa 1810. The present drawing, although not directly related to the compositions of Lawrence’s oils, would appear to date from the same period.1
