Catalogue Note

Bertram Mackennal was commissioned to design King George V's portrait medals, coinage and stamps in 1910. The Australian sculptor remained in the monarch's favour until his death, producing numerous portraits of the King in various media. The present bronze bust was given to Robert Crewe-Milnes in 1911, the year he was created Marquess of Crewe. Presented beautifully on a marble column and with a personal note from George V himself, it is a testament to the friendship that existed between Crewe and the King.
