Description

  • Inscribed and dated: April 1899,
  • SILVER, GLASS
  • 34cm., 13 1/2 in. wide
rectangular, on four volute supports, pierced gallery border with gadroon trim, fitted with two pieced square bottle holders complete with two silver-mounted cut-glass ink bottles, inscribed and engraved with the initials MC below a countess's coronet, stamped: '778 U,' in original oak box with blue baize lining, brass disc engraved with the initials MC below a countess's coronet and engraved ivory retailer's label: 'R. & S. GARRARD & Co. CROWN GOLDSMITHS AND JEWELLERS, 25, HAYMARKET, LONDON, W.'

marks and condition good, probably never used; the oak box is good but needs to be cleaned because of various paper labels and sticky tape marks

Catalogue Note

The inscription reads: 'Presented to Lady Margaret Primrose on her Marriage to the Earl of Crewe by the Employees and Cottage Tenants of the Mentmore Estate. April 1899.'

Sold with this lot is an undated MS letter, which reads: 'Mentmore. My Lady, We haﷺve great pleasure in asking you to accept this small 🍬present from us on the occasion of your approaching marriage with our very best wishes for your future happiness on behalf of the subscribers, We are, My Lady, Yours most respectfully, James Smith Joseph Griffiths John Aspell Thomas Besent,' in envelope addressed to 'Lady Margaret Primrose, Mentmore.' Also included is a MS list of the subscribers' names.
