Catalogue Note

The inscription reads: 'A MD . G . Presented to the Rt: Hon: Earl of Crewe. 25 April 1910. Jude on the Hill, Hampstead Garden Suburb.'

The Latin inscrip🌺tion reads: 'Deus est / est Pater non / est🦹 filius non / est Spirit: non'

This trowel was used on 25 April 1910 by the Earl of Crewe, then Secretary of State for the Colonies, for the laying of the foundation stone (inscribed by Eric Gill) of the Lady Chapel of the church of St. Jude on the Hill, Hampstead Garden Suburb. Contemporary reports of the event record that the trowel was presented to the Earl by Lady Byron on behalf of the Church Building Committee. The building of the church, to designs by Edwin Lutyens (1869-1944), began in 1909, two years after its foundation. St. Jude’s was consecrated in 1911 and the building🌠 completed in 1935.                                    &ಞnbsp;
