The rectangular case decorated with black enamel, the clasp set with circular-cut and baguette diamonds, opening to reveal four compartments and a lipstick holder, measuring approximately 160 x 110 x 20mm, signed Cartier, British hallmarks and maker's marks, case stamped Carter. 

Condition

Signed Cartier London. Maker's mark JC. British hallmarks for 9ct gold, London, 1936. Losses to enamel. Estimated total diamond weight approximately 2.00 - 2.50 carats, stones bright and lively. Clasp secure. Accompanied by original case stamped Cartier, damaged.

Catalogue Note

Gladys Hardy (1891-1977), daughter of Daniel Montague Hardy, was the third wife of Sir William Garthwaite, 1st Baronet (1874-1956). They married on the 4th February 1937. Sir William Garthwaite was a shipowner and sugar planter. He helped the Admiralty with shipping between Canada and France during World Wars I and II. He was decorated with the award of the Chevalier, Crown of Belgium, and was created 1st Baronet Garthwaite, of Durham on the 19th May 1919.
