Catalogue Note
Alicia Penalba (1913-1982) was from Buenos Aires, Argentina and studied there at the School of Fine Arts. She relocated to Paris in 1948 and moved away from the more traditional medium of painting to work entirely with sculpture. For three years she worked alongside Ossip Zadkine (1890-1967) in his workshop. Zadkine, originally from Belarus, came to Paris in 1914 and was highly involved with the Cubist Movement (1914-1925). Penalba was very much influenced by this structural, abstract and avant-garde art form.
