Catalogue Note

Designers were careful to take the technical limitations of the material into account, in particular the architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel, a pioneer of the gothic revival. The Berlin goldsmith Johann Conrad Geiss, together with A.F Lehmann and S.P Devaranne all supplied designs to the Royal foundries of Berlin and Gleiwitz, as well as producing Berlin iron jewellery themselves and exhibiting at the Great Exhibition of 1851 in Hyde Park.

Its final flourish came in 1915 when again gold jewellery was sacrificed by German women during the Great War.
