Description

The rectangular case enamelled in blue and cream, the centre of the case applied with an Indian style enamel square plaque depicting two birds on flowering branches, framed with rose diamonds, and a vacant cartouche to the reverse, the cabochon sapphire push piece opening to reveal a mirror, powder compartment and lipstick, measuring approximately 78 x 52 x 13mm, signed Cartier, numbered, French assay marks.

Cf: Judy Rudoe Cartier 1900-1939, British Museum Press, pages 169-170 and image 94 for similar cigarette cases by Lavabre for Cartier Paris dated to 1911, incorporating a near identical enamel plaque by Imre Schwaiger, who supplied Cartier with Indian jewellery and objects.
Condition
Signed Cartier Paris, New York, Made in France, numbered 0620, French assay marks for 18 carat gold. Some minor abrasions commensurate with age and wear, two small chips to blue enamel border on bottom right hand side of case on lid and top middle on the reverse. Overall good condition.
