Condition
This work is in overall very good condition and the painting has a lovely rich impasto surface. The canvas is not lined and UV examination does not reveal any retouchings. The UV light does reveal two very fine lines of fluorescence to the center of the upper right quadrant though these do not appear to be consistent with retouchings. There is a faint stretcher bar mark horizontally across the painting.

Catalogue Note
The artist's model for the present work was his wife, Marie Barbaroux. In the tradition of the great nineteenth-century Symbolists, Martin depicts her here in the guise of the poetess Clémence Isaure.
