Catalogue Note
Riding his gold-bedecked chestnut-brown stallion, a nimbate Maharana Ari Singh (1724-1773) of Udaipur successfully practices making a goal as two retainers run alongside him at top speed struggling to keep up with the charging horse.
Compare a large painting of a polo match with Maharana Ari Singh and his sardars playing in the Chaugan attributed to Bhima Sutar (Topsfield 1980) and dated 1761 in the National Gallery of Victoria (accession number: AS174-1980) showing the Rana twice on a blue-green field amid his mounted sardars, standing retainers and attendants nearby with bhistis (water carriers) sprinkling water on the playing field with white encircle🥃d ♐goalposts.
