Catalogue Note

Riding a dappled gray gold-caparisoned stallion, nimbated Maharana Ari Singh  (1724-1773) of Udaipur twists acrobatically in the saddle to successfully fire his matchlock at an escaping boar which he galloped past moments before.  His horse with nostrils flaring leaping up as if in a synchronized ballet with his royal rider - with all four equine legs seemingly airborne at the same moment.

Against a broad expanse of flat yellow-green ground the briefest suggestion of grassy landscape defined by quick broad brushstrokes - here in visual juxtaposition to🧜 an extremely fine portrayal of the Maharana and horse with lavish and skillfully applied gold embellishment so often a characteristic of the Royal Udaipur atelier𝐆 during the reign of Maharana Ari Singh.
