Catalogue Note
A distracted semi-clad nayika and her sakhi (confidante) on a terrace by a man-made lake, or tank, languidly amused by a school of fish who happily splash for morsels of food. She prepares herself with ointment from the gold vessels at her feet - seated at the edge of a bed whose saffron pillows lie tossed and disheveled. A handmaiden observes them from within a grove of plantain trees and blossoming shrubs. In the distance a lord, depicted blue in the guise of Krishna, perhaps dressed for a battle campaign - his index finger pointing upward - instructs an attendant nobleman. A large palace fortress in the distance.
For subject reference see a wall-painting in the Rang Vilas, Bundi, datable to ca. 1790 of "A Lover's Arrival" illustrated in Milo C. Beach, Rajput Painting at Bundi and Kota, Ascona, 1974, fig.74.
Another related subject, this time with a nobleman, watching "Royal Women Feeding Fish" through the parted leaves of a plantain, is in the Art Institute of Chicago, (McNear 💃Collect🅠ion) accession no. 1998.189.
