Catalogue Note
Seated under an awning on a white terrace, a nobleman smokes from the long stem of his huqqah. He offers a jeweled ornament to his young son as two female family members watch approvingly, smiling demurely and holding their veils. Musicians play and two attendants stand behind - their jamas projecting into the frame of the red border. Tame pouting pigeons and a peacock watch.
Another related portrait of Umed Singh of Bundi, with his sons and courtiers, likely from the same royal atelier as the present example, had been in the Collection of Stuart Cary Welch inscribed with Devanagari inscriptions in white ink listing the participants. The present example has a quite similaꩵr composition and color palette with the participants likewise seated on a white terrace enclosed by a marble balustrade - a diamond-shaped carpet under the Raja and showing attendants with fans spilling out of the border on the left side of the composition.
