Vamana, the dwarf avatar of Vishnu, places his foot in a golden bowl, being washed by the asura King Mahabali and his queen. Beneath an awning, in the tented encampment of Mahabali, rishis converse and debate, holding manuscript pages of the Vedas. Asura (demon) attendants bring in provisions and stand guard.
