Catalogue Note

El Animal del Pedregal belongs to a group of wooden sculptures originally conceived by Mathias Goeritz as smaller examples of his most acclaimed urban sculpture, also called: El animal del Pedregal.

As Goeritz's first large format sculpture, El animal del Pedregal was commissioned in 1951 by famed architect Luis Barragán to enrich 🥃the public's access to Jardines del Pedregal de San Angel, a residential development he built in 1948-49. Measuring approximately 4.5 meters in length, the work has become a symbol of a short-lived era 🐼in Mexico City where enthusiastic Utopian ideals were fulfilled through creative urban design and architecture.
