The Eighteen Arhats

‘Arhats’ or ‘luohans’ are known as the original disciples of Buddha, who had reached a stℱate where reincarnation is no longer neccesary. Their statues are commonly found in most Chinese Buddist temples. Chinese folklore told a story of eighteen robbers, whose repentance eventually guided their way to becoming saints. Some also believed that there were ori༺ginally only sixteen arhats, but since ‘nine’ is a symbol of ‘infinity’ in Chinese culture and that ‘eighteen’ is a multiple of nine, thus there are in total eighteen arhats with their respective characters and stories.
