Catalogue Note
A watch of similar design, without diamonds, is illustrated in René Boivin: Jeweller, by Françoise Cailles, page 352.
A style innovative even by today's measures, the concept behind this piece lies in the modern art being produced in the 1930s as well as Jeanne Boivin's friendships with artists such as Francis Picabia and Raoul Dufy. Always inspired by the world of flora and fauna, Boivin used the soft hue and smooth texture of sandalwood to craft the links of the wristwatch, using strategically placed diamonds to add an extra touch of drama and glamour to the look. Sleek and chic in nature, this wristwatch represents the Art Moderne shift to thinking about jewelry as functional art, rather than as stone-encrusted ornament.
