Catalogue Note

Henry Dunay, the acclaimed American jewelry designer and goldsmith, has long believed in using different colors, textures and looks to create jewelry of a heightened quality and unquestionable beauty. Dunay has taken pride in the expert craftsmanship applied to his jewelry from the beginning of his career in New York in 1956. Over time as his career excelled and his company expanded, Henry continued to work personally on his jewelry, even spending time on the workbench. His focus has been on technique, creating jewelry that is imaginative and bold, inspired by the world around him.

One of the most successful collections that Henry Dunay has produced is titled Sabi. The refined, thin lines of carved gold and sophisticated matte finish of the jewelry are characteristics easily identifiable and defining of Dunay’s oeuvre. The sculptural, organic shapes appear with a range of materials and stones. The Bamboo Cuff, lot 137, exemplifies the strong Japanese influence that drove Henry to create the Sabi collection. The Toi et Moi sapphire and Puffy rings (lots 138, 139) exhibit Dunay’s ability to combine large colored stones with the Sabi finish gold to create sleekness with a burst of color in his jewelry. Henry Dunay appreciated colored stones for their bold and vivid colors, as is distilled in the use of garnets, emeralds, sapphires and aquamarines in the present Dunay pieces. The uniqueness, creativity, drama and individuality of Henry Dunay’s jewelry displays sophistication and radiates modern elegance.
