In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion. Illustrations in the catalogue may not be actual size. Prospective purchasers are reminded that, unless the catalogue description specifically states that a stone is natural, we have assumed that some form of treatment may have been used and that such treatment may not be permanent. Our presale estimates reflect this assumption.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.
Catalogue Note
Accompanied by AGL report no. CS 69499 stating that the sapphire is of Kashmir origin, with no indications of heating.
In 1898 Mabel Stevens (1868-) married Canadian Francis Sydney Smithers (1849-1919). Mr. Smithers started out as a banker, having joined his father’s firm of Unger & Smithers in New York. The firm had dealings with foreign exchange, bank acceptances and commercial paper. When his father retired, the firm was renamed F.S. Smithers & Co. and played an important role in the consolidation in 1911 of the Tabulating Machine Co., The International Time Recording Co., The Computing Scale Co. and Bundy Manufacturing Co. into one single organization which in 1924 became International Business Machines Corporation. Smithers also served as Director of the American Bank Note Company, the North American Company, and the Milwaukee Electric Railway and Light Company. After becoming a U.S. Citizen in 1902, his civic activities included the founding of, along with J.P. Morgan and others, the East side Housing Settlement, a settlement house in the Yorkville area of the East side of Manhattan.
