Description

  • Tiffany & Co.
  • gold, citrine
The cushion-cut citrine within an openwork mounting decorated with scrollwork flourishes, size 8, partially signed Tiffany & Co.; 1910-1915.

Condition

The mounting in fair to good condition with wear to the highpoints of the chased engraving commensurate with age. The shank is split at the site of where it had previously been sized. The bezel presents an uneven outline on close inspection; it is unclear if this is original to the time of manufacture or if the stone had been removed for polishing. The richly colored medium-deep orange citrine is eye-clean with one small cavity to a bezel facet.

Catalogue Note

Accompanied by a copy of a letter of authentication from Janet Zapata.

This ring was created not long after Louis Comfort Tiffany ventured into the world of jewelry design in 1902, and during the time that Meta Overbeck was head of the jewelry department. Similar to other jewels created during Overbeck's term, this ring is centered around an exceptional gemstone and is bold in design. According to the letter of authentication from Janet Zapata, 'This special ring is a superb example. Instead of setting the citrine intro a pronged mounting, Tiffany designed a special cut-out bezel mounting decorated with anthemion motifs that continue on both sides of the shank. The citrine is set into a special, one-of-a-kind mounting that resembles a crown. The rich gold mounting enhances the deep orange citrine.'
