Jean Schlumberger began his career designing for Parisian couturier Elsa Schiaparelli in the 1930s; first creating decorative buttons and later costume jewels to complement her avant garde collections. After serving in the French Army during WWll  Schlumberger moved to New York, opening his first jewelry salon in 1946. It was here that he began to build an impressive client list that would include the Duchess of Windsor, Diana Vreeland, Jacqueline Kennedy, Jayne Wrightsman, Babe Paley and Bunny Mellon. In 1956 Schlumberger began designing exclusively for Tiffany & Co., a partnership that lasted until his retirement and made him one of the most important jewelry designers of the 20th century. The pieces shown here, lots 413 and 414, were created under Schlumberger’s own signature before he began his career with Tiffany & Co.
