Description
- gold, hardstone
Comprising a necklace, bracelet and pair of earrings, the necklace suspending 27 oval-shaped green chalcedony intaglios of various ancient Roman deities and motifs, accented by 26 pearls, length 17 inches, unsigned; the earrings suspending two oval-shaped green chalcedony intaglios, flanked by fringes supporting four pearls, with partial hallmarks; the bracelet with three oval-shaped green chalcedony intaglios, spaced by gold plaques with the Greek works Pistis, Elpis and Eros (Faith, Hope, Love), length 6 inches, with maker's mark for Castellani.
Condition
All pieces in good general condition, the rich bloomed gold mounting with gentle surface wear and patination commensurate with age. Two of the rondelles at the hinges of the bracelet are deficient. The medium-deep green intaglios present varying degrees of color mottling and are semi-translucent, appearing opaque when worn. The intaglio next to the female end of the bracelet is several shades lighter than the other intaglios. The white, slightly button-shaped to semi-baroque pearls with moderate rose and green overtones, fair to good luster with typical blemishing including peeling skins. The bracelet triple-signed; the earrings unsigned with partial assay marks on the wires, possibly an Austrian import mark; and the necklace with no apparent marks. The bracelet reads Pistis (Faith), Elpis (Hope, the lambda is upside down), and Eros (Love). The modern, Christian iteration of this sequence is Pistis, Elpis, and Agape (fraternal love). Lengths of earrings 1/2 inches. Accompanied by GIA report nos. 1172080848 and 1176080335 stating that a selection of stones from the necklace and bracelet are green chalcedony, of the chrome variety. Please note the pearls have not been tested for natural origin.
