Description

  • Willem Verelst
  • Portrait of Elizabeth Beckford, full-length, seated in a loggia with her son Peter
  • oil on canvas

Provenance

Anonymous sale, London, Christie's, 16 March 1923, lot 64 (as by Pompeo Batoni).

Condition

This very large canvas has been relined. Overall for a work of this size it is in good condition. There is a canvas seam running across the work horizontally through the mothers chest. Some isolated discolored retoches are visible in scattered parts of the composition, namely in the child's dress. The varnish within the mothers blue fabric has blanched somewhat. With an adjustment of older retouches and new varnish the painting could be hung in its current state. In a carved wood frame.

Catalogue Note

The sitters are Elizabeth Beckford, née Ashley, wife of Julines Beckford (1717?-1764) of Stepleton, Iwerne, Dorset, and her son Peter (1740-1811).  The Beckford family’s wealth derived from plantations they owned in Jamaica.  Peter Beckford’s Grand Tour as a young man through France, Switzerland and Italy is well documented in published letters.1  His full-length portrait (oil on canvas, 94 by 64 in.), now in the Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen, was painted by Pompeo Batoni in 1766.
