Description

  • Portrait of King Charles VII of Naples, later Charles III of Spain (1716-1788)
  • oil on canvas, within a painted oval

Condition

There is an old glue relining which is firm and stable. The portrait is within a painted oval and the painting is of rectangular format (only the oval portion is reproduced in catalogue). The overall condition is good with quite nice preservation of detail especially in most areas of the costume. There is some slight thinness to sides of hair and to the browns of his jacket sleeves, but this is not distracting to the overall composition. There are some very small paint losses at the lower left corner and a few scuffs at the outer edges. Under UV light: the varnish fluoresces unevenly making it difficult to read. There is a possible area of retouching at far center right on the edge of his cloak. Another possible area of retouching in background to right of his gloved hand at lower right. Others possibly in the upper background. One small filled loss at right side of collar. This painting would benefit from a light cleaning and fresh varnish. In a gilt wood frame with some nicks and losses to the gilding.
