Literature

J-L. Bordeaux, François Le Moyne and his Generation, 1688-1737, Paris 1984, p. 90, cat. no 43, reproduced fig. 38 (as possibly a copy after Le Moyne by Robert Levrac de Tournières, circa 1723-25).

Condition

The canvas has a fresh glue relining and is firm and stable in its support. The paint surface is well preserved overall, particularly in the flesh tones, though some of the darks of the wig have perhaps sunk a little into the background. This doesn't affect the reading of the painting. Inspection under ultra-violet light is impeded somewhat by the varnish, though there appears to scattered, minor retouching in the hair and possible strengthening to the ribbon and the easel. There are two very minor retouched losses in the forehead. Overall it presents a clear image beneath a fresh and clean varnish. No further work is required and it can be hung in its current state. Offered in a carved giltwood frame.
