Catalogue Note

Although oil portraiture was introduced in India in the 19th century, it was not until later that indigenous artists began to achieve prominence in this field. Antonio Xavier Trindade, fondly nicknamed the 'Rembrandt of the East' was one of India's leading modern portrait painters.

This painting is a copy of Adolphe William Bouguereau's La Source, 1877. At the J.J. School of Art where Trindade studied, European masters who painted in the🔯 academic tradition were used as examples of excellence and their works were often replicated.

Trindade was born in Goa oജf Catholic parents but immigrated to Bombay in order to earn a living. After assisting in the studio of Raja Deen Dayal, Trindade wenꦐt on to become the superintendent of the Reay Workshops.
