Exhibited

London, Gimpel Fils, Alan Davie, Exhibition of Paintings, March 1960 (ex. cat.).

Condition

Not examined out of the frame. There are pinholes evident at both the upper corners and at the lower right corner, which appear to be inkeeping with the artist's working method. There are some fine lines of craquelure apparent to some of the more impasto areas of white pigment in the upper left quadrant, and a further tiny line of craquelure to the light blue pigment at the lower horizontal edge. There are a few spots of light studio detritus, primarily apparent towards the centre of the lower horizontal edge, which appears to be the result of paper laid onto the work while the paint was still wet. Some of the dark red pigment at the lower horizontal edge appears to have seeped onto the inner ledge of the frame, thought to be as a result of the paint being still slightly wet when the work was framed. Subject to the above, the work appears to be in very good overall condition. Ultraviolet light reveals some areas of fluorescence, thought to be inkeeping with the artist's materials. The work is presented in a painted wooden frame, held under glass. Please telephone the department on +44 (0) 207 293 6424 if you have any questions regarding the present work.
