Description
- Walter Richard Sickert, A.R.A.
- The Old Middlesex
- pen and ink, chalk heightened with white
- 25.5 by 31cm.; 10 by 12¼in.
- Executed circa 1906.
Provenance
Acquired by the present owner’s mother in the 1980s and thence by descent
Condition
The sheet is attached to a supporting board with two tabs at the upper edge. There are pinholes in each of the four corners and at the centre of the upper edge which appear to be consistent with the artist's working method. There are some further tiny holes scattered across the sheet. There is a small crease in the lower right corner and some rubbing at the upper right quadrant of the composition, with some discolouration to the dark pigment. On extremely close examination it is possible to see an area of paint loss in the upper right of the composition. With the exception of the above the work appears to be in good overall condition.
The work is presented in a book mount and painted wooden frame.
