Condition

The canvas has been lined. On the extreme left hand edge, where the canvas is pulled over the stretcher bar, there are lines of cracking, but otherwise the canvas appears sound. There are some lines of craquelure in some of the more impasto areas of paint, most apparent to the figure of Eve and to the tree in the upper centre of the composition, which is lifting slightly. There is also some craquelure and flecks of loss towards the right of the upper horizontal edge and at the left vertical edge. There is a fleck of loss apparent in the orange pigment underneath Adam's arm, with one or two further extremely small scattered flecks of loss. There are some fine, scattered lines of reticulation in places. There is some very slight rubbing to some of the raised tips of the impasto. There is a small scuff to the torso of Eve. Subject to the above, the work appears to be in good overall condition. Ultraviolet light reveals some very small flecks of retouching to a few isolated spots on the figures. The work is presented in a painted wooden frame. Please telephone the department on +44 (0) 207 293 6424 if you have any questions regarding the present work.
