Condition
Grading this photograph on a scale of 1 to 10 -- a 10 being a printing-out-paper print with rich dark brown tones and highlights that retain all of their original detail -- this print rates a 10. The right and lower edges have yellowed slightly. Typical of printing-out-paper prints, this print has a very glossy surface. When it is examined closely in raking light, several small handling creases can be seen on the surface, most of which do not appear to break the emulsion. As is typical of Atget's work, the print is unevenly trimmed to the image. The thin vertical line in the upper left sky area is in the negative rather than something on the surface of the print.
In 'The Work of Atget. Volume III: The Ancien Regime,' Maria Morris Hambourg publishes a chart which dates Atget's photographs by their series and negative numbers. Our dating of this print is based upon the author's assessment of the photographer's series and negative numbers. According to the chart, and Atget's negative number '782,' this photograph was taken circa 1910 (cf. The Work of Atget. Volume III: The Ancien Regime, pp. 181-85).
