Description

  • Berenice Abbott
  • 'GUNSMITH AND POLICE DEPARTMENT'
  • Gelatin silver print
numbered '204' in the negative, the photographer's Federal Art Project 'Changing New York' and caption stamps, with title, date, and annotations in ink, on the reverse, 1937 (Yochelson, Lower East Side, pl. 30)

Condition

This early contact print, on lightly-textured, double-weight paper with a faint surface sheen, is in generally very good condition. Although the highlights are crisp and bright, the mid-tones are rendered somewhat warm and the details of the image are light overall. As is characteristically seen in Abbott's 'Changing New York' prints from the period, there are small clamp impressions in the black margins from processing. There is minor wear to the margin edges and corners. The reverse of the print is faintly age-darkened at its periphery. The 'Changing New York' stamp is annotated in ink with the following information: Place: '1) 6 Centre Market Place 2) 240 Centre Street Manhattan' Neg. # '204' Code: 'III.I and II.[ ].I' Date: 'Feb 4, 1937'
