Description

  • Johan Hagemeyer
  • 'FROM S. F. FERRY BUILDING STEPS' (SAN FRANCISCO)
  • Gelatin silver print
titled and with annotations in pencil on the reverse, 1921 (Hagemeyer, pl. 6; Hallmark, back cover)

Condition

This print, on double-weight paper with a nearly matte surface, is in near excellent condition. The figures in silhouette are rendered in a rich, velvety black, and the highlights are creamy and golden. In high raking light, a faint patina of silvering is visible at the periphery of the print. Also visible in raking light are a few tiny deposits of original retouching overall, as well as a 3-1/2 inch scratch extending from the lower edge. An isolated cluster of pin-point-sized rust-colored deposits is visible upon close examination along the left edge. The print is trimmed to the image and there is minor rubbing along the lower edge. On the reverse of the print, 'Last,' 'Dup,' and 'circa 1918' are written in an unidentified hand in pencil. Although the date 'circa 1918' is written on the reverse of this print, this photograph is commonly dated 1921 in Hagemeyer literature.
