Description
- Paul Strand
- MAN IN A DERBY, NEW YORK
- Gelatin silver print
the photographer's printing notations on the reverse, flush-mounted to paper, signed by him and with numerical notations in an unidentified hand in pencil on the reverse, 1916, printed later (Circa 1916, pl. 41)
Provenance
Lunn Graphics International, Ltd., Washington, D. C.
Condition
This neutral print, on cool, double-weight paper with a slight eggshell texture, is in generally excellent condition. In high raking light, the following are visible: tiny deposits of expertly-applied original retouching on the sitter's face; and a small crease that does not break the emulsion extending from the upper margin slightly into the image. There is minimal yellowing on the margin edges.
As is frequently seen with Paul Strand's photographs, this print has the photographer's extensive printing notations written on the reverse. Because the print is flush-mounted to thin, textured paper, these are only partially visible: ' 2A'; '1957'; 'Illustrators Spec'; 'soft light'; 'f16-34'; 'Coat shaded'; 'shirt +6'; and '59 D.'
On the reverse of the paper mount are the following in an unidentified hand: '#5'; '3' (circled)'; and framer's notations.
When examined under ultraviolet light, this print appears to fluoresce.
