Catalogue Note

Herbert Sidney Austin was an American engineer behind the expansive Iraq pipeline that brought crude oil from the oil fields of Kirkuk in northern Iraq through Jordan to Haifa in Palestine. Built by the Iraq Petroleum Company across mostly British and French mandated territory, it covered 1200 miles and cost $50,000,000 to build. The pipeline was operational between 1935 and 1948.
