Catalogue Note

The inscription reads "Presented to THE SIRDAR BY THE BRITISH OFFICERS OF THE EGYPTIAN ARMY, on the occasion of his Silver Wedding, 1888 18th June 1913."

General Sir Francis Reginald Wingate G.C.B, G.C.V.O., was Sirdar (commander-in-chief of the Egyptian army) from 1899 to 1916 and High Commissioner to Egypt 1917-19. He was credited with quelling Egypt and Sudan's nationalist movements. In 1888, he married Catherine Lesli🐟e D.B.E, daughter of Capt. Joseph Sparkhall Rundell R.N. He was an author of several books, including Ten Years in Captivity of the Mahdi's Camp. He was created a baronet in 1920.
