Catalogue Note
Vladimir (Woldemar) Hau was named Court Painter in 1840, specializing in Biedermeier-style portraits of members of the Imperial family and nobility. He retained the position through the reigns of Alexander II and III. The handwritten note on the back indicates that this portrait was once in the stock of the Galerie Popoff in Paris and had been acquired from the prominent Petersburg antiquarian and collector Mikhail Savostin. We are grateful to Dr. Lidia Karnaukhova, author of numerous articles and exhibitions on Hau, for assistance in cataloguing this lot.
