Catalogue Note
Founded in 1759 for the training of pages to the Imperial Court, the Corps des Pages was re-organised in 1802 into a military academy for sons of the nobility and the most senior officers, although pupils retained the privilege of attending to members of the Imperial family at court ceremonies. With a curriculum founded on the ideals of the Order of the Knights of St John, the school was housed from 1810 at the Order's St Petersburg headquarters, the Vorontsov Palace. All six of Grand Duchess Elizabeth Mavrikievna's sons, Princes Ioann, Gavriil, Konstantine, Oleg, Igor and Georgi Konstantinovich, attended.
