Description

Condition

Some loss of levkas and paint to the borders of the icon, particularly the lower border. Some retouching to the left side of the face of the virgin, to her hands, to the garments of Christ and especially to the inner sections of the mandorla and left of Christ's face. The right hand of Christ repainted, as well as part of his left hand. The silver oklad with a repaired loss to the top centre where the makers marks would have been, with crack remaining. Also repaired and strengthened at the bottom centre. The gilding later.

Catalogue Note

The treatment of the facial features and the distinctly coloured background clouds bear comparison to an icon of the Reverend Euphrosyne of Suzdal in the Novodevichy Monastery, which dates to 1692 from the Kremlin Armoury School.
